Islamic Relief Pakistan (IRP) is currently implementing the “Caring Communities For Children (CCC)” project which aims to contribute towards creating an enabling environment for the development of children of Dhok Hassu, an unplanned urban slum in Rawalpindi, just on the bank of The Capital of Pakistan. Project focuses upon protection, inclusion and service delivery oriented social mobilization/advocacy by improving livelihood opportunities, water and sanitation facilities with particular engagement of youth to ensure future of the area is in safe and socially aware generation. Assignment Rationale: A snapshot assessment in Dhok Hassu revealed that area is populated with community which has migrated from other parts of country to earn their livelihoods in metropolitan twin cities. The study depicts that 85% of men are working as unskilled labour in nearby markets at very low wages while 35 to 40% women works as house maids. To cater with pressing family financial needs, youth are deployed in markets for work without any specialized skills thus instead of showing positive trend in development of posterity, families are struggling to even sustain their current status. Specifically orphan and widowed families are more vulnerable in this scenario by not having earning hands in the family. Keeping in view the inflation and cost of education, living and to meet daily needs they rather depend on financial support received as charity by relatives or institutes. Few widows have received vocational trainings under various initiatives and are meeting their requirements through small level production which is insufficient to fulfil their needs. Hence there is a need to undertake a thorough market assessment (scoping study) with business development planning in the project area (Dhok Hassu) and its surroundings to target the expected impact of project “Improved socioeconomic state of poor families living in urban periphery (Dhok Hassu) through implementation of CCC”.
